Student Shows Special Interest in Political Issues

By Lauren McCollum

Monday, Feb. 5, sophomore Megan Zobac decided to attend the Mount Vernon Democratic Caucus at the First Street Building for the second year in a row. Since Zobac is under the age of 18 she could not participate but was able to observe. She enjoyed getting to watch the debate and got a lot of information out of it.

“I’ve always found the political world interesting, and as a young person what they’re doing is really going to impact my life,” said Zobac, “so I believe we should take the opportunities we do have to use our voices even though they might be small because ultimately the best way to change the future is by policies and getting involved.”

The recent CARE conference helped push Zobac to act on her thoughts and start a feminine products drive. After some research she discovered a big portion of people are having to resort to unsafe products. She realized this was a small way on a much larger scale of problems where she could try to help.

“I am a Democrat and I have a lot of progressive views which are obviously the opposite of the government’s views currently,” said Zobac, “but because of this my eyes have really been opened to how people are still struggling in certain areas the government seems to ignore for the most part which is kind of upsetting.”

Zobac is currently very involved in women’s rights but would also like to branch out to some different environmental issues.

“I think there are a lot of ways we can better the environment,” said Zobac. “I am a vegetarian which is good for the environment because producing meat is not the best in my opinion. My goal is to go vegan at some point in the future which I think can help the earth a lot because we only have one planet, and I am going to do everything I can to reduce my carbon footprint.”
