“It took three shampoos and two conditioners just to get the tangle out, and 2 weeks later I still had glitter in my hair,” said sophomore, Erin Fencl, when talking about the sacrifices one makes if she is a Mount Vernon Color Guard member.

Color Guard members struggle to get the perfect look for every show and performance.That unique look which involves makeup, hair, and glitter, ends up being everywhere. The hairspray is sprayed on with a car painter gun, which “gives it more of an image,” said  Fencl.

“It makes my driveway all glittery,” said Becky Edwards, a color guard performer. “Last year’s uniforms were either really hot or really  cold, only one piece, and had choking collars,”  Edwards said. This year’s uniforms are two piece, half blue, half black, with glitter. To show off their shoulder straps and their tops, each girl puts her hair in a high ponytail that is thick with glitter.

To those who are unfamiliar with what Color Guard is, it is a group of girls, only, who twirl flags, dance to choreography that is designed by middle school band teacher Elise Rodenberg and senior Jessie Weitnauer. The Color Guard enhances the marching band, making both entities a stunning sight for all to see.There are three songs that the Color Guard performs for football games, which includes a specific flag for each song, matching the mood or theme of that particular song.  Each member of the Color Guard has her own personal flag to practice with if they practice at home.

To be a member of Color Guard,  the girls have to either have a free first hour or be involved in band, orchestra, or choir. Erin Fencl said she was jealous last year when she wasn’t involved.

“If you have a dance background and like looking pretty on the field, then definitely join the Color Guard,” said Daniella Torres-Roe, a freshman who joined the Guard this year.
