Sarah Ryan has been named Iowa’s recipient of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Sarah played on the Mount Vernon state champion volleyball, basketball, and track teams last year, and her softball team came in fourth at state. She is currently a setter for the volleyball team, which will compete to defend its state title this week. There were 55,000 Iowa applicants for the award, and then it was narrowed to a male and female contender from each school, and then 20 state finalists. The male Iowa recipient is Corey Joens from Dunkerton.

Sarah and Corey are both competing with finalists from other states to be one of 12 national finalists who will compete in New York City for the national award Dec. 10. The national finalists will be featured on ESPN during the televised ceremony. They will receive a gold medal and their high schools will be awarded $2,000. The one male and one female winner of the Wendy’s Heisman Trophy will be recognized during the collegiate Heisman trophy broadcast on ESPN Dec. 11, and Wendy’s will donate $10,000 to those two students’ high schools.
