Spotlight on Zehra Khan

Zehra Khan

By Kyla Rand-
Over the years, volunteering has become a big part of Zehra Khan’s life. She started at the Hallmark Care Center and St. Luke’s because it would look good on college applications, but after realizing people needed help and that it didn’t take much time, it became more. Her most recent time spent volunteering was on October 10 at the Mt. Vernon Crop Walk.

“It was a good way to get involved in the community and help throughout the world,” Khan said.

She raised money by going door-to-door with the Mt. Vernon Lisbon Cross Country Team and contributing with her family. The total amount raised by all for this event was over $3000.

“It was hot,” Khan said. “But it was a lot of fun. I knew it was for a good cause so I felt good doing it, knowing my walking would help people live a better life.”

The road they walked was lined with posters with information about world hunger and had two card board houses the size of some people’s homes in very bad situations. All of these were made by the Mt. Vernon Spanish classes.

“I learned about poverty,” Khan said, “and there are people willing to help if you get them involved.”
