The Mount Vernon boys basketball team won another home game Friday Jan. 30, against Maquoketa, picking up their ninth win of the season.

The Mustangs shot 37 percent from the field and about 23 percent of their three pointers against the Maquoketa Cardinals. They also managed to make 60 percent of their free throws.

After the recent absence of one of the Mustangs key starters they knew they were going to need someone to step up to the plate. Coach Wes Burns selected junior Nick Bevans, who was willing to fill the spot. “I felt that I had worked hard, and was looking forward to the game,” Nick said.

For first time starter, this was an exciting game for Nick. “I was really nervous but at the same time
really excited,” he said. For any player, a chance to get into the game is a
very fun and rewarding experience. Nick did an excellent job for his first game
making five of the Mustangs’ first seven points. “Looking back on the night, I
feel I played a fairly good game,” said Nick.

The Mustangs lead halftime at 33-26. In the second half, the Mustangs kept the momentum going finishing out the game at 74-56.

Now with the Mustangs nearing the postseason with a record of 9-7 Nick
says, “We hope to win the rest of our games.” The Mustangs are looking
forward to their next away game Friday, Feb. 6 against Beckman.
